About the Labour Party

The Labour Party was founded, as the Labour Representation Committee, in 1900. Labour Governments have many significant and important achievements: the National Health Service and Minimum Wage are just two. The Labour Party has achieved major economic, social and political change.

What Labour members believe in is as diverse as the members themselves. We are all proud of Labour's achievements in Government, but we know more must be done to achieve lasting change in society. On the back of a Labour Party membership card is the best description of what we, as a party, believe in, it says:

'The Labour Party ... believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us a community in which power wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few, where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe, and where we live together, freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.'

Or more simply, we believe in:

  • social justice
  • strong community and strong values
  • reward for hard work
  • decency
  • rights matched by responsibility

The Labour Party wants you to join us in establishing a better Britain. Only by having a strong and diverse membership can we do so. Will you join us?
