Cllr Nickerson
Cllr Nickerson's post on Twitter, which has since been deleted

Across the country, people are reacting with great anger at the recent social media posts from Cllr Paul Nickerson – an outspoken Conservative on East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

As you can see from the above image, he was implying that Jeremy Corbyn is sympathetic to terrorists, but (more importantly), he made light of a horrendous terrorist act which recently took place in Liverpool.

He has since removed the post, but it has already been widely shared and his unprofessional conduct has been condemned at both a local and national level.

As a result, this CLP has sent the following message to Councillor Jonathan Owen – the leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council and it’s Conservative Group:

Dear Cllr Owen,

As you are undoubtedly aware by now, Cllr Paul Nickerson (a member of the Conservative Group, a committee chair and former whip) posted a message on Twitter yesterday featuring Jeremy Corbyn holding a wreath in front of a burning car.

This tweet is deeply offensive to Jeremy Corbyn but, most importantly, it makes light of the horrendous terrorist incident that happened in Liverpool.

Elected officials should maintain an air of professionalism. We are also in a time where we are being reminded (rightfully) to be kind. Cllr Nickerson’s tweet fails on both counts.

This incident has now gone on to gain national attention.

This has the potential to seriously damage the reputation of East Riding of Yorkshire Council and it’s elected members. It negatively affects people’s trust in politicians and democratic processes.

The Beverley and Holderness Constituency Labour Party urges you to publicly condemn this post from a Cllr who has a history of generating negative press attention. We also request that you take urgent disciplinary action against him.

Yours sincerely,

The Beverley and Holderness Constituency Labour Party

An amended version of this message has also been sent to Caroline Lacey – the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chief Executive.

A press release is also being issued to various media outlets.

We are in an era where everyone is being reminded to ‘be kind’. We also expect high standards from elected officials. Cllr Nickerson’s post fails on both counts and should be condemned.
