Housing is a major issue for people in the East Riding of Yorkshire

Campaigners have condemned the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s record in building council homes as shameful. Thousands of people in their area are on council house waiting lists they say, while the Council fails to take the issue seriously.

Whilst Hull City Council recently celebrated building its 500th Council home in 5 years, a Freedom of Information request has revealed that East Riding of Yorkshire Council has completed just 108.

Speaking today, Beverley Labour’s George McManus said:

“The rural housing crisis has led to misery for thousands of people especially for younger members of our community. The Council has a legal responsibility to provide adequate housing and it’s failing abysmally.

East Riding Council is being put to shame by neighbouring Hull City Council which has built 5 times the number of Council homes in the last 5 years. People are being let down. It’s not good enough. It needs to change.”
