I joined the Labour Party 50 years ago. From 1997 until 2018 I represented Yorkshire and the Humber CLPs on Labour’s National Policy Forum.

I’ve been a Parliamentary Candidate twice:

In 1997 I stood in Haltemprice and Howden when I was memorably chased by a voter in a Land Rover armed with a shotgun.

In 2005 I stood in Beverley and Holderness. During the campaign I and Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon were assaulted by foxhunters during a visit to Beverley. I lost to Graham Stuart by 2,581 votes.

In 2004, I was the first ever Labour mayor of Pocklington.

I’ve been CLP Secretary for the last few years. Prior to this, I was CLP Chair and LGC Chair for 10 years.
